Lithium Race: BMW Wants To Ramp Up Sales Of Electric Cars To 100,000 In 2017.

CITY A.M. BMW i3.

CITY A.M. reports that finally Great Germans are putting their engineering magic to work and BMW is ahead of the EVs race in Europe now. Next year BMW wants to ramp up sales to 100,000 of EVs! To put it into perspective: it took GM 7 years to sell 100,000 Chevy Volts from 2009. GM is aiming at 30,000 Chevy Bolts sold next year, according to lithium battery maker LG. BYD backed by Warren Buffett will sell 100,000 EVs only during this year! Tesla is aiming to 80,000 - 90,000 EVs sold this year. By all accounts, it is a very impressive target for BMW. This year 250,000 EVs are estimated to be sold in Europe.
This brand deserves to survive The Switch and now they look serious. After the range of BMW i3 was improved with a new lithium battery they have sold 7,000 in September alone! BMW i5 will be coming out fully electric and electric MINI can get its market share as well. We need all the best electric cars we can get now. As we have discussed before, China is The Centre Of Lithium Universe, but there is life in Europe as well. Actually, Europe is ahead of the U.S. in electric cars sales this year right after China. This year we will have a tipping point: we can get 1,000,000 of EVs sold just in one year, almost the same amount as we have during all our history before 2016.

Lithium Boom Continues To Fuel Chinese Majors.

Industrial Minerals reports about Ganfeng Lithium and Tianqi Lithium from China and their incredible growth confirming my observations.

Infographic:

"Lithium: Goldman Sachs estimates that a Tesla Model S with a 70kWh battery uses 63 kilograms of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) – more than the amount of lithium in 10,000 cell phones.
Further, for every 1% increase in battery electric vehicle (BEV) market penetration, there is an increase in lithium demand by around 70,000 tonnes LCE/year."
"China is The Center Of Lithium Universe, links below will provide you with more information why it is really happening so fast. China is already the largest market for electric cars, BYD backed by Warren Buffet is the largest EV manufacturer in the world and Chinese companies are producing the largest amount of lithium chemicals for the batteries. There are 25 companies which are making 51 models of electric cars in China now. This year we will see over 500,000 EVs sold in China. It took GM 7 years to sell 100,000 Chevy Volts from 2009. BYD will sell 100,000 EVs this year alone!
Now Electrek reports that China is pushing for the very aggressive ZEV mandate: "8% Of New Cars To Be Electric By 2018, 12% By 2020." I will translate: this year we are getting just over 1% of new cars sales in China. By 2018 they are talking about a factor of 8 and by 2020 about the 12 times that amount! Digest. Maybe the Orange is the new Black, but economics has still the same language, money talks. And Green is the color of money these days. BYD estimates its profit up 84% this year after triple digits growth before! Read more." Read more.

EVObsession

"EV Obsession reports that now we have 500,000 electric cars in Europe. As you remember, I expect China to sell only this year 500,000 EVs with 207,000 already sold by August. Europe has 91,300 EVs sold by July and is taking the second place after China and before the U.S. with 93,197 EVs sold by September, which is now falling into the 3rd place. Europe will reach its 100,000 EVs sold faster than the U.S. this year. What is really interesting to note is that Renault Zoe is leading sales in Europe now with 14.2% market share. It is a nice car, but not the best electric cars can offer. Tesla Model S is at 8.7% of EU sales. It is the best electric car, but not affordable for the mass market by ant stretch of the imagination.
Now you can better realise why I am calling that the tide is coming after the release of GM Bolt and Tesla Model 3 following after that. For the first time, we will have two electric cars with more than 200 miles range and below $40k. Another very interesting point in this article that 250,000 EVs are estimated to be sold this year only in Europe! We are reaching the pivotal point on our way towards the mass market for electric cars and the total electrification of our transportation. We have now only over 1 million electric cars sold in all of our history. This year alone China can sell 500,000, now we can start talking that the U.S. will match Europe at least and we can have 1,000,000 electric cars sold just in 2016! China will see EVs sales accelerated after cleaning up its incentives scheme for the EVs makers earlier this year  and Tesla will be ramping up its production with GM selling Electric Chevy Bolts now as well.
Markets will be up and down, companies will come and go, but we are witnessing the historic moment of coming out of ICE-age in our transportation. We are talking here about the disruption of $4 trillion transportation industry based on Lithium Technology. Now it is time to check out where all this lithium will be coming from. And the answer: "From Panasonic" - will be better than: "From the underneath of Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada", but still the same like if electricity is coming just from the socket in your wall. Lithium Race: Is This The All-Electric BMW i5?

AutoGiude.

AutoGuide reports on its findings of how the all-electric BMW i5 can look. Mercedes have made a lot of headlines recently with its new EQ electric brand and 10 electric cars coming by 2025. Volkswagen, after its best DieselGate advertisement campaign for electric cars,  promises to be good and to deliver 30 electric cars - if they survive the tide of litigation including $9 Billion in lawsuits from its own investors.  Lithium technology is here, but it is still more talk than best electric cars we can buy. GM Bolt will change it this year and Tesla Model 3 will ignite the race in the West later. We need millions of electric cars ASAP  and BMW i5 will be welcomed to the EV Team. BMW must make a bold move now just to stay relevant as Tesla Model S is already outselling Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7. They have just a few short years to deliver before China will start making EVs capable of earning respect in the West.  There are 25 companies which are making 51 models of EVs already in China with 200 developing 4,000 new EV models.  They are not Teslas yet but getting there very fast.

Things are really heating up in the electric car race.
First Toyota decided it would explore long-range electric vehicles (EVs) after previously saying it would reserve EVs for short-distance commuting. Then Jaguar Land Rover got in on the action, with the launch of its first electric car imminent.
Now BMW is ramping up its EV focus: it's got its sights set on 100,000 electric car sales next year. That'll involve boosting its sales by two-thirds.
According to Sü ddeutsche Zeitung, chief executive Harald Krueger said: "Electric mobility will come, but demand is not going through the roof at the moment."
The Munich-based firm expects to bump up its deliveries of electric and hybrid vehicles to around 60,000 units this year, Krueger said in an interview published today. Sales of battery-powered BMWs have reached around 100,000 since 2013.
In an effort to accelerate sales, the company is also increasing the battery range of its i3 city vehicle by 50 per cent this year. The i3, BMW's only fully-battery powered car, sold 25,000 units last year.
It wants to expand the share of electric cars and hybrid models to between 15 per cent and 25 per cent of sales by 2025.
In the UK, thousands of BMW workers voted in favour of strike action earlier this month after the company announced plans to close its UK final salary pension scheme from June next year.
The Unite union held a consultative ballot of 4,000 of its members on strike action in response to the BMW decision. It said that 75 per cent of members voted, 96 per cent of them in favour of taking industrial action.
The next step is for Unite to hold a full statutory ballot on strike action, which would pave the way for production disruption.
The union's members account for most of BMW's production workforce, which includes staff at the Rolls-Royce Goodwood plant and Mini factories in Oxfordshire and Swindon."
